Abused Men in Scotland (AMIS) is a national organisation dedicated to supporting men who are experiencing, or who have experienced, domestic abuse.

We welcome calls from men in need of support or advice, and from men and women seeking help for male friends or relatives.

AMIS is currently funded with help from:

BIG Lottery, Scottish Government Equality Unit, The Tudor Trust and Voluntary Action Fund.

Big Lottery - Becoming a Survivor Award!

AMIS has been awarded nearly £420,000 to build our services for men who experience abuse, in partnership with Rowan Alba Ltd in Edinburgh!

This will greatly increase the amount and range of support we can offer across Scotland through our helpline, and introduce a face to face service in Edinburgh.

Online 1-2-1 Chat Support

It’s not always easy to speak to a stranger on the phone. To make access to our support a bit easier we are launching an online 1-2-1 chat support service as of Wednesday 29th January.

New funding to support men affected by domestic abuse

Abused Men in Scotland (AMIS) and Rowan Alba Ltd awarded Big Lottery Scotland funds

Abused Men in Scotland (AMIS) and Rowan Alba Ltd have been awarded over £400,000 over 4 years to help support men affected by domestic abuse in Scotland. The funding will provide for an expansion of the AMIS national helpline service in terms of greatly increased opening times, alongside a new face-to-face service delivered in Edinburgh by Rowan Alba.

In 2012/2013 over 60,000 incidents of domestic abuse were reported to the police in Scotland. The proportion of incidents with a male victim has steadily increased over the past decade from 10% in 2003/04 to 18% in 2012/13. However, these are only the incidents that have been reported to the police. The experiences of many more men, and women, will have gone unreported.

Aaron Slater, AMIS Helpline & Support Manager, commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded this funding. Services for men affected by domestic abuse in Scotland are very sparse so this will go a long way to providing some much needed support. We’re looking forward to delivering this project with our colleagues at Rowan Alba. I hope that any man reading this who is concerned about domestic abuse knows that help is available and there is nothing to be ashamed about.”

Helen Carlin, Rowan Alba Chief Executive commented: “This is important recognition for the need for support and services for men experiencing domestic abuse. For too long this has been an unmet need and we are thankful to Big Lottery for recognising this. We are looking forward to building on the experiences of both organisations and providing a ground breaking service for men who are falling through the gap in support services”

Many thanks to BIG Scotland and all who buy lottery tickets!!
